There are many therapies for autism that claim to be effective, however, only some of these are supported by scientific research. Therapies shown to be effective via well-conducted scientific research are called empirically supported treatments (ESTs).
Our knowledge about effective treatments for children with autism is growing. However, the autism field has some way to go in establishing a solid research base that can be applied to children across the range a full range of ages, abilities, and circumstances. For example, sometimes research may not be available on children matching your child’s age or individual characteristics. Evidence-based practice integrates the best available intervention research with clinical expertise in the context of a child’s individual characteristics, culture, and preferences (American Psychological Association, 2006).
CliniKids is working hard to improve the lives of children with autism spectrum disorder and/or developmental delay. We want every child to have access to the world’s best therapies so that they can reach their full potential. This is why our integrated team of world-class researchers and exceptional clinicians are putting research into practice.
Currently, it is estimated to take 15 years for research to be translated into clinical practice. At CliniKids, we find this unacceptable. Through collaboration, our teams are working to close this gap and provide families access to the very best evidence-based therapies in the world as quickly as possible.
